属名「Eotephradactylus」は「灰の翼を持つ夜明けの女神」を意味し、火山灰に埋もれた地層と、翼竜の進化系統の根元に位置する存在であることを象徴しています。
種小名「mcintireae」は、長年の労をねぎらい、発見者であるマッキンタイア氏の名を冠したものです。
